February 1, 2016 A few weeks back, I received this email from Tony Anderson, a 53-year-old marathon runner.
Mary,I am 53, soon to be 54 in a couple months. I have run 34 marathons in 34 states while raising money for Big Brothers Big Sisters of NW Michigan. I have run about 17 marathons since turning 50 (kinda lost count).I also had an enlarged prostate and went through green light laser surgery in May of 2015. I trained and ran 2 miserable marathons since. Feeling better now and dealing with muscle pulls and strains as I try to get ready for my next marathon.I have hesitated to offer up my prostate story but I like your show and if I can help others who might be in a similar predicament then I guess, let’s try it if you think it is something you might want to address. -Tony A
After a quick Google, I learned that according to WebMD, 1 in 2 men between age 50 and 60 will experience symptoms of an enlarged prostate. I didn’t know that.
My professional life now includes researching the common experiences of we 50+ midlifers, chatting with them about their hot flashes, aching backs, sagging neck skin and now… enlarged prostates. I wanted to talk with Tony and had we spoken that day, this episode would be about the symptoms and discomfort, frustration and treatment for this condition.
Keep in mind that at 53, Tony is physically in the best condition of his life, but that doesn’t change the situation.
This is just what happens… getting old
No matter how well we take care of ourselves, our bodies will experience the wear and tear of age. 50 years of biking, bending, lifting, walking, running and simply hanging out with good ol’ Father Time WILL lead to arthritis, weaker bones, enlarged prostates, cataracts, and injuries that do not heal 100%. You can’t stop time as hard as you may try.
Tony says he will run another marathon, this is his story.
