A round-up of tips, tricks and observations in midlife…

#1 A Sign of our Age

It seems a week doesn’t go by without hearing of a friend’s family member passing away. In Episode 4 Suddenly Everything Changes, Liz spoke of how much it meant to her when sympathy cards arrived. I now keep a supply on hand so that I don’t neglect to send one just because I didn’t have time to stop at the store. Get a supply of 28 here, shipped to your door.

#2 Driving You Crazy

In Episode 6, Happily Ever After, my guests shared their practice of agreeing that when driving together around town, the driver of the car is not to be subjected to any criticism on the route they choose to get where they are going. No comments at all. I heard another tip that I’ll pass along: If one of you finds it impossible to keep your lips zipped, that person should sit in the backseat and focus on their smartphone, catching up on email, Words With Friends, Candy Crush, whatever.

#3 Cool It!

In Episode 7, The Mind of Menopause, Mary and Diann Wingert, LCSW talked of the psychotic behavior that can result from multiple nights of lost sleep from hot flashes. Here is your high-tech savior:  A cooling pillow. Women swear these save lives. Men say, “Thank Goodness!”

#4 Bucket List Bonus: Two Birds, One Stone

Here is an idea for a great weekend getaway. Think of a city that you’ve always wanted to visit, but haven’t been to yet. Combine that with a concert, play, performance that is on your bucket list and BINGO! You’ve got the makings of an awesome trip. Start far enough in advance so you can score great seats and you have a very memorable trip. Go with your significant other or recruit a group of friends. Elton John in Vegas. Billy Joel in New York, Madonna in Tokyo?

#5 Tick-tock, Tick-Tock

In Episode 2 Crushing 50! with Mike Weitschat, he suggested guessing how long you think you will live and then count the number of years you have left. I started researching Life Expectancy Calculators and found the following were available free online. The researchers who designed this calculator have acknowledged that there is one factor that was omitted. If you have a happy marriage you can give yourself a couple more years.
