Mary’s roundup of the week’s episodes, recommendations and random thoughts…Not So Deep Thoughts

I’m pondering the analogy between the midlife chapter and autumn. Trees losing their leaves, us losing our hair and other valuable assets. But also, that exciting back-to-school feeling at this age of starting new projects, learning new tricks and reaching out to make new friends. I’ve replaced school supplies with office supplies, I am a true junkie for colorful paper clips and glossy folders promising to make me more organized and productive.

Recommended Distractions

Movie: Hector And The Search For Happiness

A great midlife flick, no special effects or super heroes, but Hector will charm you with his quest for happiness.

Book: Curious Mind: The Secret To A Bigger Life, by Brian Grazer

Brian is the business partner of director Ron Howard. Together, they have produced Splash, Apollo 13, A Beautiful Mind and other great movies. Brian credits his success to his curiosity.

TV: The Americans on FX

Soviet spies, living undercover in Washington, DC during the Reagan years. You’ll enjoy the awesome attention to detail in capturing the era of wall phones and fashion while getting sucked into a fabulous family drama of international espionage. 3 seasons for binge viewing.

My Wagging Finger of Shame

I find it inexcusable that midlifers neglect their personal and professional development regarding technology when there are so many free or low-cost online resources available. We must take responsibility to upgrade our skills to remain competitive and employable. You Tube can teach you so much! Here is a free trial of my favorite online training source, lynda.com. I apologize, this makes me rather testy.

Gratitude

Thank you Terri Ray, Program Director and queen of the airwaves at WKLT. In 2006, when I started my radio show, with absolutely no experience or training whatsoever, Terri made a casual comment that literally saved me from just giving up. “Mary, nobody ever died from bad radio”.

Be a Better Person

This election season, volunteer to help or write a check of any size to a candidate running for local office (School Board, City Commission, etc…). These people, who put themselves out there to help our communities, are the backbone of our democratic system. Find one you believe in and offer some support.

Full Disclosure

Okay, six things this week. I do make money from some of the links in this newsletter. This is my business. I hope that you find enough value in the content I provide through the free podcast, blog and newsletter that you’ll feel good about supporting my work. It’s a win-win. I only recommend products and services that I use myself or have fully researched for quality customer service. You can read the legal mumbo jumbo that the lawyers wrote HERE.

Have a great week!
